This is a New Year

The whirlwind of the holidays has passed and I'm settling back into my blogging rhythm. Other than that there is not much settling in, more like throwing a lot of things up in the air, throwing new things at myself :) The start of this year has me more excited than any other year!

I've been filled with joy and anticipation and energy. There is so much creativity running around me right now! Today, my sweetie and I completed our first Drawing Lab exercise (we plan to do one of the 52 activities per week). He was so cute, trying to avoid it for a day and a half. When we finally got down to it I was practically giddy. Curled up in bed with our Sharpies, I realized how much fun it is to draw and create with him. He had this mischievous giggle going, while he sketched cats up to all sorts of trouble. His imagination left me feeling a little intimidated, and then it just inspired and fueled me. Here's what I came up with (you can click on the pictures to make them bigger, I think).

Herding cats! (There are 30).

After that (and after I had a nap - since my body likes to remind me I'm still healing - it was a big weekend after all :), we grabbed the cameras and ventured out for day 3 of 365, looking for something to grab our attention and our lenses. We are like little kids when our cameras are holding images - barely containing our excitement to sift through them on the computer. It reminds me of Hallowe'en when you can't wait to get home and dump out your loot and sort through all the goodies.

The thing that is revving me up the most right now, though it's a close tie with the other two, is a path I've uncovered in regards to school. I've been planning my approach to a combined degree in Computer Science and Pscyhology. It turns out that there is a combined major in Computer Science and Visual Arts!! You mean, I could take courses that I love and bring me absolute joy, and they would be considered part of my degree! In fact, they would be requirements?! Soo-ee! I can barely keep myself in my seat.

Of course there is fear too.
  • What if I don't get accepted?
Oh my gosh, I get to put together a portfolio for my application. So cool!
  • What if my art sucks?
I just found out I have creativity,
and they're going to give me technique to add to it? Kapow!
  • Society frowns upon the arts. Shouldn't I take something more practical?
Here's what Ken Robinson has to say about that:

"Creativity now is as important in education as literacy,
and we should treat it with the same status."

Go for it! I have yet to be published in a lit. magazine, but I still remember the soaring feeling of creating something that I got from submitting. :)

@All - The update. I'm finishing up the first math upgrade course I started last term and not taking on anything new until the summer. The plan is to have my visual arts portfolio compiled and ready to submit by the end of January, a month early! Woohoo!

I got Drawing Lab for Christmas and plan on doing an exercise a week as well! It's going to be fun to see what you do with it.

As for school - soooowweeeeeet! Girl I am soooo excited for you. I know it can be totally intimidating, but this is going to be awesome for you! Of course, if you don't get accepted (for whatever lamo excuse) look at it as a good thing rather than bad - you can still learn anything you want without someone telling you what is right and what is wrong. I'm an example of that. Not that I'm awesome or anything, but I'm so new at this whole art thing still and everything I'm doing is all me, no one teaching or leading me here or there. There is a freedom in it, which is a good thing for me. Of course, that's a fat IF you don't get in. I'm sure you will and it's going to be so amazing.

I like all your cats and how fun that you have someone to draw with. The degree you want to get sounds cool, creative people and computers go well together, at least that's what my husband says,he's a software engineer and he's always trying to get me to learn different types of code! Don't doubt yourself and go for it!
